Changing Mindsets About Poverty Through Community Leadership

Stage Two Step-Up to Community Leadership is a network developed by MVCAA that focuses on changing the mindset of the community as it relates to poverty. One goal is to help individuals accept those in poverty as viable community members that have the ability to become leaders who can influence policy.

This network will engage community members in meeting the basic and supportive needs of low-income participants while helping them develop the life and community development skills necessary to become and remain self-reliant.

Step-Up to Community Leadership curriculum will be developed with more emphasis on community and economic development by Community Action Agency staff, University of Missouri Extension and other network members.
  • How to identify stable and thriving communities;
  • Engaging citizens to meet community challenges;
  • Civic organizing;
  • Appreciative Inquiry techniques that can result in improved strategic thinking and dialogue process;
  • Strategic planning using Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) Analysis; Strengths, Opportunities, Assets and Results (SOAR) process; and
  • Other community planning to ensure the involvement of all citizens in quality of life issues.
